Frequently Asked Questions
Is it normal to feel nervous about counselling?
Absolutely, it is quite common to feel nervous or anxious before your first therapy session, or even subsequent ones. This is a natural response, and many people share this feeling.
How long will counselling take?
The duration of counselling varies based on the reasons for seeking help. I typically offer an initial series of up to six sessions, after which we can discuss the possibility of continuing.
Is counselling confidential?
Yes, confidentiality is a cornerstone of our work together. Conversations in the consulting room remain private, and only those you choose to inform will know about your therapy. There is a rare exception: if there is an indication of risk to yourself or others, I may need to breach confidentiality, as per ethical guidelines.
Will I have to revisit the past?
Counselling and psychotherapy focus on living a healthy and fulfilling life in the present. While early relationships and experiences can provide insight and understanding, the goal is not to dwell on the past but to use that insight to explore new ways of being.
How will I know when I am finished with counselling?
During our initial consultation, we will discuss your goals for counselling. If we agree on a fixed number of sessions, that will determine when you finish. For open-ended work, we will discuss and consider the right time to conclude over several sessions.
Cost
The cost per session is £45 for 60 minutes. I do have a lower cost for Care Workers and those on low income. Please contact me to discuss.
How do I pay for a session?
Payment is due at least 48 hours before the session, unless otherwise agreed.
What if I need to reschedule a session?
I understand that emergencies can arise. If you anticipate not making an appointment, please let me know when you book it. I will do my best to accommodate such circumstances.
Late Arrival/Missed Sessions
In-person appointments: Due to scheduled appointments, I cannot accommodate late arrivals or extend sessions. If you arrive early, please wait until your appointment time. Online/telephone appointments: I will call you at the scheduled time. If the call is unanswered, I will try again shortly. If the second attempt fails, please contact me when you are available, but the session will still start as scheduled. If you haven't contacted me within 15 minutes, it will be considered a cancellation without notice.
Cancellations
I have a 48-hour cancellation policy. If you cancel more than 48 hours in advance, there is no charge for the missed session. If you cancel after that or miss an appointment, you will still be responsible for the payment, as the time has been reserved for you.
Exceptional Circumstances
Should unforeseen circumstances prevent me from conducting a session, I will provide as much notice as possible. I will not charge for appointments I cancel and will strive to reschedule at a time that suits you best.
What details do you keep?
All information is kept secure and confidential. Notes are brief and solely for my reference to recall our discussions. Like most counsellors, I receive supervision and may discuss cases with my supervisor, but no identifying details are shared. Supervision is a mentoring process that enhances my ability to support clients.
